Read your water meter

STEP 1: Find your water meter.

Water meters are typically found near the front of your property in a ground box. Carefully remove the meter box lid and lift the meter’s protective cap to reveal the face.

STEP 2: Look at the numbers on the meter’s face.

Look at the row of white digits with black numbers labeled “Gallons.” This shows the total amount of water (in gallons) that has flowed through this meter.

STEP 3: Determine the reading.

We bill in 1,000-gallon increments. When reading the meter, ignore the last three digits (the ones that change most often).

STEP 4: Determine your usage.

Subtract your previous reading from the current reading to see how many thousands of gallons you’ve used.

Example:  The numbers left to right on the meter are 0650040. The meter read, in thousands of gallons, is 650. If the previous read was 645, the billable amount on the water bill will be 5 (650-645=5).
